About This Project

Each of our projects is unique. Our pre-design evaluation identifies a property’s strengths and weaknesses.

The property surrounding this Kensington Hills mid-century modern home had many strengths, but the approach was too abrupt and unattractive. Our client had consulted with several designers before speaking with us. After our site visit/consultation they felt confident that our team could transform the approach successfully.

Our design solution employed a cast-in-place concrete retaining wall to significantly change the topography of the approach area. This allowed for a more generous gradual walkway and stairs, up to the level of the house entrance. We prioritized new entry stairs and a walkway with other design elements, including a fountain, a patio, a native plant garden and retaining walls complimenting the main design element.

Our client is a native plant enthusiast, and the space is not fenced off from deer.   Our team combined native California plants with cactus and other succulents. As an alternative to a drought-intolerant lawn, we planted a South African native lawn substitute ‘dymondia margaretae’ in the level open space of the front yard.

We listened to the architectural language of the existing mid century modern building when selecting building materials. Sometimes less is more.
